The Discovery
Have you ever wondered why you think the way you do? Why you like some things and dislike others? Have you ever thought about how you would live your life differently if you could live it over? What motivated you to choose your line of work? Sometimes it's obvious why we make certain choices. Other times it is not so clear. On occasion , it seems we don't have any choice at all. On a deeper level, do we make choices or is everything predestined? Do we really exercise free will or are we prisoners of old unconscious patterns? Are we just playing out some role that was defined for us by our family? I know that in my family, because my father and uncle were dentists, there was tremendous pressure for me to follow in their footsteps. I would have made the world's worst dentist.
Why do we have relationships with certain people? I think back at some of my failed relationships and the whim they were based on. When looking back at my values I understand why. I remember when I valued having a band and picked a partner who supported me in that endeavor. When I started looking at the qualities I wanted in a life partner, I realized we were on different paths. It took me three years to realize this. It was only when I remembered who I really was and became true to myself that I created the meaningful relationship that I always wanted and cherished. We need to look at who we are at our core. Once we tune into this energy, life has a way of sustaining us.
A few months ago I was reading a story that caught my imagination.
A pregnant lioness was hunting when she discovered a herd of goats. While chasing the goats she went into labor and gave birth but did not survive the delivery. The goats who were scattered in the distance saw what happened and came back for the little lion cub and adopted him. The cub grew up thinking it was a goat. It bleated like a goat, smelled like a goat, ate grass and walked and ran like a goat. For all practical purposes it was a goat. And when the cub reached adolescence, one day while grazing with his goat herd, a lion attacked the herd. In the attack , one goat was killed and the others fled. But the lion cub did not run. The lion could not figure out why this younger lion who looked like him acted like a goat. He then took the adolescent down to a nearby pond so he could see his reflection in the water. Still the young lion did not act differently. Then the older lion grabbed him and forced meat from the dead goat down his throat. In that moment the young lion let out a roar of awakening as he awakened to his true nature.
That roar of awakening is what is missing in most of our lives. It is a call to awaken us to who we really are. When we are being truthful to our true nature and core beliefs, our lives will be more consistent with the self we want to awaken. It's possible that a shift in consciousness is all that is needed. Ask yourself if there is a new way to define who you are. Perhaps there is a metaphor that speaks to you or a phrase or quote that you can say "yes" to. If you can discover this new way of defining who you are, you can experience life in a new way that will allow you to find your awakened self and hear the roar within. When we live life from this connected perspective, life is more fulfilling and meaningful.
I love receiving your many responses and feedback. Thank you and keep them coming. Feel free to pass on this letter to the friends in your circle and let them know about the advantages of being on the journey. A special thanks to Wisewomyn Editing for all of the insightful editorial suggestions.
